Using Google Adwords™ To Build Your Business

Setting Up Your Google Adwords™ Campaign Right Will Not Only Save You Money…. It’s A Must To Make Money Online

I was paying over $150 to have my website hosted and managed by a company based out of Toronto. Their Google Adwords™ department did an excellent job at coming up with over 1300 keywords that I could potentially bid on to market my products and services. The problem? They had absolutely no marketing knowledge and no idea how Google adwords™ works!

What these people were doing was taking all keywords and using them all for all my different ads. It wasn’t long before Google started asking me to pay $5 and $10 just to bid on my keywords. I had no idea that Google was trying to weed me out of the marketing business.

Here’s what my keywords looked like…

  • dog training
  • dog training course
  • dog training classes
  • dog training school
  • dog training tools

These are just to give an example, and what I want you to notice is that, these seemingly similar keywords mean something different to the searcher. The most obvious one is ‘dog training tools’. Think about it, if someone types in ‘dog training tools’ into google, is it likely that they are looking for a school or for an ebook? Or is it more likely that they are looking for a kennel or a collar & lead?

Well there might be a possibility that they would be interested in a dog training course, but more than likely this could be someone who’s already training their dog(s) or it could be someone from a dog training school looking for tools to train dogs. Now here’s why this is important…

The way google works is, you tell Google “I want to show my ad whenever someone types in the word ‘dog training tools’, and I’m willing to pay $1.00″. Then Google will look at you and say “OK we’ll show your ad as long as people click on it”. (There’s many other variables, but let’s stick to basics here)

If you are advertising a dog training course and you are bidding on ‘dog training tools’ then not many people will click on your ad and Google will pretty much tell you to either change your ad so people click on it or pay five times as much to keep your ad running. In other words, they want to make sure that the searcher gets what they want, and if you can’t offer the searcher what he/she wants, then you’ll get what’s known as the Google Slap.

Think of it as getting measured on accuracy. If you hit the target everytime, Google will reward you by charging you less. That’s right, the more often people click on your ad the better your Click Through Rate (CTR) will be. To be more clear, if your ad gets clicked on 10 times out of the 10 times it is shown then you’ll have 100% click through rate. If it only gets clicked on 5 times out of 10 times it is shown then you’ll have 50% click through rate…. and so on. So the lower your Click Through Rate, the higher your bid price will be and the higher your Click Through Rate, the lower your bid price will be….

If you can’t get a high enough click through rate then you’ll be weeded out of Google Adwords™, until you learn direct response marketing, which is nothing more than knowing what your customer wants and simply offering that to them!
