The Brothers Bloom “Hidden” Copywriting Secrets
We grew up with stories…. bedtime stories… and since then, the brothers bloom, a twisty well-told story, is the most attention-sucking movie I’ve seen…
Besides the amusement and love-the-couch session, I enjoyed watching this movie because it helped me home in on one of the greatest skills a copywriter can have. It’s not the witty sometimes-clever comedy or putting together some sort of convoluted tale. No… it’s much simpler than that. It’s because of what the movie is in general. It’s an adventure story!….
I don’t know what it is, but the language and the way you are tossed around from scene to scene is hypnotizing… It is one of those flicks that makes you want to take back what you said about people who watch movies twice having no life…
Now before you go PhD yourself in copywriting through this movie, I do have to warn you that you should take the ‘con’ out of your story if you are going to be writing copy to sell. The movie was for entertainment purposes only. Your copy is not. Your copy should be about grabbing attention and keeping that interest all throughout it, just like the movie.
Here’s what you need to pay attention to….
The language…. Yep, it’s good to write in your own voice. What you say is more important than how you say it. However, if you let your verbs do the descriptions for you in short, concise language you’ll be ahead of the game.
To be fair, the style used in this movie is probably too much style if you want to use it for copywriting. This is because copy should be written in 8th grade level language and not delightful inventive words. So Keep It Simple Superman…. (I know the “S” on the shirt didn’t stand for superman, but that’s besides the point)
Now, here’s the next secret. The law of reciprocity says that if you give someone a gift, they are often obligated to return the favor. Telling a good story is a gift on its own. You’ve provided a few minutes of entertainment for someone, which is said to be worth 4 times more than sleep or rest. So, if you haven’t done so already, go spend some quality time with your couch and the flat screen while watching this AP (Advanced Placement) storytelling class…
Then come back and tell me what you think?
